Scaling Up Solar: Larger Solar PV Modules for Ground Mount Projects

Scaling Up Solar: Larger Solar PV Modules for Ground Mount Projects
By Ross Purdie, CCL Commercial Sales Manager, UK

As demand for utility-scale solar projects grows in the UK, we're seeing a noticeable shift towards larger, higher power modules. For developers, installers and EPCs working on multi-megawatt ground mount installations, these large solar PV modules offer a clear commercial advantage.

Why Larger PV Modules Make Sense

The benefit of larger solar panels for utility-scale projects is straightforward. With fewer modules needed per megawatt, installation time and mounting system costs can be reduced.

Large-Format Modules Now Stocked at CCL

We now stock a selection of high-output PV modules from Trinasolar, LONGi Solar and DMEGC Solar which meet the needs of large-scale projects. While some of these large-format, dual-glass bifacial modules may occasionally find their way onto rooftops, their size and weight make them much better suited to ground mount systems.

  • Trinasolar 610W TSM-610NEG19RC.20 – Vertex N Dual Glass, N-type i-TOPCon Silver Frame / Transparent Bifacial – In stock, next-day delivery
  • Trinasolar 615W TSM-615NEG19RC.20 – Vertex N Dual Glass, N-type i-TOPCon Silver Frame / Transparent Bifacial – In stock, next-day delivery
  • DMEGC 590W DM590M10T-B72HSW – Bifacial, Dual Glass, N-type Mono Silver Frame / White Backsheet – In stock, next-day delivery
  • DMEGC 705W DM705G12T-B66HSW – Bifacial, Dual Glass, N-type Mono Silver Frame / White Backsheet – In stock, next-day delivery
  • LONGi 610W LR7-72HGD-610M – Hi-MO7 HPDC Bifacial Mono Silver Frame / White Backsheet – In stock, next-day delivery

We also have access to the full product range from each module manufacturer for larger project requirements. This includes Trinasolar’s Vertex N series up to 720W (TSM-NEG21C.20), which is available to order on a project basis.

A Shifting Utility Landscape

Traditionally, utility-scale solar in the UK has been a closed market, served by a small number of specialist EPCs with direct ties to module manufacturers. But the landscape is evolving. We’re now seeing more crossover between C&I installers expanding into larger-scale work and utility EPCs exploring mid-sized commercial projects. As a result, more project conversations are opening up about ground mount solar modules, and we're ready to help.

Direct vs CCL: What’s the Difference?

C&I solar installers buying direct from manufacturers may expect:
  • Attractive pricing – though we often match or beat direct manufacturer pricing
  • Slower communication – not all manufacturers are staffed to deal with direct customers.
  • A requirement to order by the full container – often leaving the installer with hundreds of excess modules that are not needed.
  • Large upfront payments – with little or no access to credit terms
  • Rigid delivery schedules – since stock is ordered from the factory, this can mean long (12-week) lead times and result in inflexible delivery windows where everything is delivered to site within an inconveniently narrow time frame.

Why Work with CCL?

Distribution is what we do, and, as a long-standing UK and European distributor with experience in logistics and delivery for large-scale projects, we offer a more flexible approach in terms of quantities, scheduling and payment:

  • We have close, direct relationships with leading manufacturers – giving you access to competitive pricing and extended warranties for high power solar panels.
  • We work across Europe with significant storage in the Netherlands – this allows us flexibility for large project order stock to be held in the Netherlands and pulled to the UK as and when required to save on double handling charges.
  • You don’t need to order full containers – we offer full pallets or exact quantities for stocked solar modules.
  • You can take advantage of flexible call-off options – store your project stock in the Netherlands and have them delivered to site when they’re needed.
  • You can access credit terms – available for approved customers, with invoicing upon dispatch available to support cash flow.
